Only when it is very hot does it seek a shady spot inside. It is also possible to keep the Maremma sheepdog in a house with a large garden, so that it has enough room to run around and has close family contact.
The breed was born in 1958 from the crossbreeding between the great Abruzzo shepherd dog and its smaller relative, the Maremma shepherd dog. Even today the shepherds appreciate his originality and the protection he gives to his master and the herd. In Italy he is also used as a territory guard and as a domestic and farm dog.
