The Maremmano Abruzzese loves the great expanse and especially the closeness to his master. For centuries until today his main task has been to protect the herd and the shepherd.
The Maremmano Abruzzese always follows his flock: during the day he always accompanies them vigilantly to the pastures, at night he camps nearby and keeps watch. Even at temperatures well below freezing point, this robust and resistant breed always prefers to stay outside.
Only when it is very hot does it seek a shady spot inside. It is also possible to keep the Maremmano in a house with a large garden, so that it has enough room to run around and has close family contact.
The breed was born in 1958 from the crossbreeding between the great Abruzzo shepherd dog and its smaller relative, the Maremma shepherd dog. Even today the shepherds appreciate his originality and the protection he gives to his master and the herd. In Italy he is also used as a territory guard and as a domestic and farm dog.
