Is Corn Safe for Dogs to Eat?

Are dogs allowed to eat corn? Commonly considered as a vegetable (though it can also be categorized as a fruit or grain on the basis of how it is grown), corn offers a lot of health benefits. It is healthy and nutritious for humans as it has magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, calcium, Vitamin A, B, C, and E (whew, that’s a mouthful and it goes on). The crunchy grains provide numerous minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Corn also contains a lot of linoleic acids. This essential fatty acid is important for healthy skin and a shiny coat. But how about dogs, you may ask?

Why do dogs love to eat corn? Is it safe for them to eat?

Other than the fact that corn is healthy, dogs simply enjoy the taste and sweetness of the corn. That is why it is a real treat for many dogs. However, it is essentially important to note that not all parts of the corn are safe for dogs to eat. The corn cob should be avoided as the whole cob or large chunks of it can cause gastrointestinal damage or blockage. This holds especially true for small and medium dogs but it can also affect large dogs. Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and constipation are some of the signs of illness. Immediately contact your veterinarian so they can advise of the necessary steps to take.

Corn for dogs

Physiologically, dogs are omnivores – just like humans – and therefore need a healthy portion of vegetables and grains in addition to meat. Although corn is very healthy, your dog should only eat this treat in moderation. Corn on the cob contains a lot of carbohydrates that are converted into sugar and can, therefore, be fattening. Because corn is healthy and inexpensive, standard dry food also contains a large proportion of corn kernels.

Things to consider when giving corn for dogs to eat

  1. Remove from the cob before giving it to your pet. Never feed your dog with corn on the cob as it can be a choking hazard.
  2. Use it as a treat or food topping as dogs should only eat corn in moderation. In addition, make sure the corn is plain and never add any seasonings such as salt or spices.
  3. Popcorn is also safe for dogs to eat as long as it is plain and air-popped. Just be careful not to give your dog un-popped kernels which can cause them to choke.
  4. Remember, when in doubt, ask your veterinarian before giving new food to your dog.

All things being said, you as a pet owner get to decide what you think is best for your canine friend. Corn can be part of your pet’s diet as a tasty snack but you can completely skip it and find another alternative that works for you and your dog. Cheese, coconut, and beans are some of the human foods that dogs can also eat.
