Well, that’s a start: cheese will not impair your dog’s sense of smell or make him blind.
Cheese is often discredited because it is a dairy product. Some cheeses contain lactose, or milk sugar. And many of our dogs cannot tolerate lactose. The reason for this is the missing enzyme lactase, which can break down milk sugar.
Lactose intolerance manifests itself through diarrhoea, flatulence and colicky stomach aches. All dogs of all ages can be affected.
If the dog suffers from lactose intolerance, it must not eat any more dairy products. You should also be correspondingly careful with special types of cheese, milk and yoghurt.
Can dog eat cheese for treats?
However, many dog owners believe that every type of cheese is harmful to the health of the dog. Fortunately this is not true.
Dogs love cheese, and it’s a good treat to have between meals. Even dogs that suffer from lactose intolerance don’t have to do without the delicacy.

Hard cheese contains hardly any lactose
The longer the cheese matures, the lower the lactose content. This is why hard cheese contains almost no lactose at all. The milk sugar is completely broken down during the long ripening process.
Soft cheese, on the other hand, still contains a residual amount of milk sugar. If your dog is sensitive to lactose, you should simply avoid fresh cheese. They contain the most lactose.
Cheese is healthy for dogs
Apart from the lactose, cheese is even healthy for the dog.
Cheese contains many essential amino acids and is a particularly high-quality food. Besides the important protein, cheese contains minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. Iron, copper and zinc, vitamin A and vitamins of the B group make cheese a very nutritious food.
However, always make sure not to feed too much cheese. Depending on the type, it contains a lot of fat, which promotes overweight. In addition, some hard cheeses contain a lot of salt, and salt is one of the foods that you should not feed.
