Just as with longhair collies, every owner of a Shetland Sheepdog (or Sheltie) knows that these dogs live for their family. The nickname “shadow” proves how connected Shelties are to their owners and how reluctant they are to leave their side. They have a serene and calm nature but sprint to their owners as soon as they are needed.
Shelties are very popular as family dogs in many parts of the world, especially in Europe and North America. Various observers assume that there are more purebred Shetland Sheepdogs in the USA today than in Great Britain – the region of origin of the dog breed.
